If you are brainstorming on how to put together a thoughtful gift, consider choosing a theme. It makes it much easier, particularly when it comes to gift baskets! Today I am showing you a French-inspired baby gift basket that any new mom would love to receive!

Gift baskets can easily be put together on a budget or you can go “all out.” The key is finding the right size basket for you what you want to do. II like this somewhat slender dotted basket I found at Target because (with a little filling at the bottom) it holds things upright quite nicely.

I went with the aqua color scheme because it is a unisex. You could easily add a pink ribbon to make it girly though.

In this basket I included:

  • 4 Aden + Anais Swaddling blankets. The balloons reminded me on France for some reason!  Target has a line of this popular brand – $34+ free shipping for a set of 4. (Usually they run about $45 for a set of 3). Although I also found this pink set  for 40% off at Nordstrom right now for $26.99 – just fyi if you need a girl baby gift or need some for your own baby!
  • Bringing up Bébé. This is a great read for a new mom or any mom really! Pamela Druckerman explored why children in France eat, sleep, and behave better than American children. (Hint: they don’t raise their children in child-centered homes like many Americans do…). It’s a fun book nevertheless.
  • Le Petit Prince. If your budget can swing it, get the hardcover edition of The Little Prince. Either way – this classic (French) children’s book is a great start to a child’s library. For a baby girl, you could include the class book Madeline.
  • Sophie the Giraffe. If you’ve had babies in the last 10 years, this needs no explanation! This popular teething toy has been a staple among French babies for generations and now American babies love it, too. I included the classic style in my basket but they have a smaller teether and now have a line of natural skincare products for baby!

Like I said, you can keep going with the French theme, by adding macaroons from your local bakery or some baby shampoo and/or lotion from the popular French company Mustela. Or perhaps some classic wooden toys. The possibilities are nearly endless!

To wrap my basket, I used a cellophane from a roll to make my gift baskets – just gather it up and pull it tight in the front. An easier option are these clear gift basket sacks that you can shrink (slightly!) with a hair dryer! Tip: World Market has gift basket kits with everything you need!

Many of the things listed above are lovely gift by themselves or paired with something else!

Merci and au revoir!

  1. I love to give a personalized Lost My Name book – they are so fun! I often get a second one for older siblings too with their name.

  2. I love gifting baby bath time baskets! Washcloths or towels, a rubber duck, and soap or lotions. I love Mustela too!

  3. My favorite gift for my first daughter is a beautiful, embroidered boudoir pillow/pillowcase monogrammed with her initials. I love giving those, any Aden Anais products (love the burly bibs!), or books. I like giving classic books but also alternatives so that I hopefully give a book they don’t already have.

  4. I love to give anything Monogramed with the newborns name/initials. I so appreciate your thoughtful and practical gift list as its been a while since my babies were babies!(23&26!)

  5. I love my Sugar Boo baby blanket. I have the one with the “Bless this child” enscription. It is the sweetest thing! I plan to make a wall hanging if I ever quit using it!

  6. J’adore this french-inspired basket! My sister gave me a french-inspired baby shower for my son – I will always treasure it! And especially love Petit Bateau, a company I have followed and worn for almost 20 years now. 🙂 Wonderful ideas, Lee!

    1. Oh my goodness – I can’t believe I FORGOT about petite bateau! One of my favorites, too! I will have to go back and add something in for this post! Thank you for the reminder Ali!!

  7. The best gift I have given was a hand crocheted blanket, booties, and cap. I appreciated receiving handmade gifts when I had my babies.

  8. I keep a baby layette clothing pattern on hand from Oliver + S by Liesl Gibson. Depending on how close I am to the recipient, I may make the pants and jacket as a set or I may just make the pants and pair them with a set of onesies. The handmade touch is much appreciated.

  9. My go to baby gift when baby arrives is a baby blanket personalized with first & middle name, birthdate and a cute train for boy or bunny for girl. The fleece blankets with silk trim are the best!

  10. I think the diaper cakes are super creative and I’m very practical but I’m not talented enough to make them!

  11. I am pregnant with my first now, and my favorite thing I’ve been given so far is a beautiful picture of my nieces to put in our baby boy’s room. My sister had a few of my favorites from their annual photo session printed by the photographer for me to have one framed in the nursery. Those sweet little girls LOVE our baby boy so much already, and it means the world to me. I love having reminders of the wonderful family he’s coming into in his room. (Side note- I also printed off a most recent photo of our nieces and nephews on my husband’s side too so that we have them beside my nieces- love it)

  12. I am expecting my first baby so I am not an expert yet!!! However, I love to gift my expecting friends with gift baskets for their baby showers. I put a lot of love and effort into picking each and every item!!!! 🙂

  13. Great post love it .sophie toy is a perfect gift for babyshowers. i got it on my baby shower 🙂 my Baby loves chewing on this with the ears, legs and body there are lots of different places to chew. Our squeaker broke, so that is disappointing, but our baby didn’t really care about the squeaker anyway. The quality of the rubber and paint are great, they’re holding up really well, even after months of use.
