Hot Cross Buns Tradition - With Empire Baking Company

Hot Cross Buns Tradition with Empire Baking Company

Do

I’m sharing a classic Easter tradition with Empire Baking Company today as well as an easy deviled egg recipe just in time for family gatherings this weekend!

Growing up just about every Easter my mom would buy hot cross buns from a local bakery. Something about that little tradition brought a smile to my face and so last year I started buying them for my family as well as a little reminder of why we celebrate this holiday.

If you have never had a hot cross bun, they aren’t very sweet, are filled with candied fruit or currants, and have a cross-shaped dab of icing on top.

The history of the hot cross bun is a little fuzzy but has it’s origin in medieval Europe. The buns we know today can be traced back to 18th century England when sellers would walk up and down the streets shouting, “One-a-penny, two-a-penny…” (which you may remember from learning to play the recorder in elementary school!).

Hot cross buns are sold year round in countries like England and Australia, but American bakeries still pretty much reserve them for the Easter season. So having them is a nice little tradition to look forward to each year, whether for breakfast before church or to serve at your Easter brunch gathering.

Hot cross buns from Empire Baking Company in Dallas are handmade from scratch  daily without preservatives, fillers, or artificial flavors. A box of hot cross buns is a lovely gift to bring to someone this week or perhaps to your in laws if you are staying with them this weekend. Just request they put ribbon on the box if it is for a gift!

Don’t forget about my favorite shortbread cookies in Dallas – a sweet little treat for a teacher or friend!

If you are in Dallas, Empire Baking Company in Inwood Village is offering hot cross buns in store all week. Ordering ahead is encouraged and requires a two day minimum. The store will be open on Easter morning. (I picked ours up last year on Easter Sunday before anyone in my house was awake!) Deadline for Easter orders is Friday at 2 pm. Their phone number is 214-350-0007. To see their regular offerings, click here.

Oh and if you need a quick little something to bring to a brunch or to serve this weekend, pick up some of Empire Baking Company’s delicious egg salad and make deviled eggs the easy way using this quick recipe with ingredients you already probably have in your fridge:
